Why You Should Avoid the UTME Mock Examination

The UTME Mock Examination is often promoted as a helpful preparation tool for candidates. While it has its benefits, it is important to note that it is not compulsory. In fact, for some students, participating in the mock UTME may not be necessary or even helpful. Depending on a student’s level of preparedness, learning style, and resources, avoiding the mock can sometimes be a better choice.

One reason some students may need to avoid the mock UTME is unnecessary pressure. The mock can create anxiety, especially for candidates who are already confident in their preparation. Instead of helping them feel ready, it may increase fear and self-doubt if the score is low. This can affect motivation and confidence going into the main UTME.

Another issue is financial cost. Registering for the mock UTME requires extra payment. For families already struggling with school fees, textbooks, and exam registration, the mock can become an added burden. Some students may prefer to invest that money in revision materials, online practice tests, or tutorials that offer more long-term value.

There is also the problem of misleading results. The mock UTME is not the real exam, and the questions, difficulty level, or marking style may differ. A high mock score can make a student overconfident, while a low score can discourage a capable candidate. In both cases, the mock result may not truly reflect how a student will perform in the actual UTME.

Additionally, the mock UTME may not suit every learning style. Some students perform better through private study, past questions, and consistent practice at home. For such students, doing structured revision and CBT practice on personal devices may be more effective than sitting for a formal mock exam in a test centre.

Time is another factor. Preparing for and attending the mock takes away valuable hours that could be used for focused revision. Instead of splitting attention between mock preparation and real UTME preparation, some students prefer to channel all their energy into the main exam.

In conclusion, while the UTME mock can be useful for some candidates, it is not a must for everyone. Students who are already comfortable with CBT, confident in their preparation, and disciplined in their study habits may choose to avoid the mock and focus fully on targeted revision. The most important thing is not whether you take the mock, but how seriously and smartly you prepare for the real UTME.
